People can now use a footbridge to cross the North Saskatchewan River from Fort Edmonton Park to the Wolf Willow Ridge subdivision.

"It represents the newest major addition to the parks and trails in Edmonton's river valley," project manager Gabriele Barry said Wednesday.

The project is the first cable suspension bridge in the city, and is the first new river crossing to be constructed in 15 years.

"We were looking for a signature design here for this part of the city ... and this one represented the smallest footprint in terms of the impact on the river here," Barry said.

The new pedestrian bridge will be officially opened once the landscaping is completed in the spring
