Health issues prevented Getty from attending the official ceremony at the Jubilee Auditorium on Tuesday. Instead, his son Darin spoke on behalf of his father and his mother, Margaret Getty.

“I know how much it means to my Dad. I know how much he would have liked to have been here to receive this,” Darin Getty said afterwards.

“The University of Alberta was a very special place to him when he was premier.”

Although he has mobility issues, Darin Getty says his father's mind remains sharp. Getty says his father had a great day on Saturday.

Don Getty served as premier from 1985 to 1992.
