A forest fire burning out of control on the eastern edge of the town of Whitecourt prompted RCMP to order the evacuation of a gas plant and other buildings on Friday.

The fire, about eight hectares in size, started around 3 p.m., said Greg Gayton, deputy director of emergency services for Whitecourt.

Crews from Sustainable Resource Development were called in to help local firefighters.

The provincial department provided four ground crews with a total of 24 personnel, two helicopters, two air tanker groups and other resources, said Shannon Stambaugh, who speaks for SRD.

No injuries have been reported.

No cause for the fire has been determined, said Gayton, but soil moisture in the area is very low.
