Fire guts house in southeast Edmonton

Firefighters were called to the house at 11 Street and 35 Avenue just before 3 a.m.

One home was gutted in a fire that broke out early Wednesday morning in southeast Edmonton.

Firefighters were called to the house at 11 Street and 35 Avenue just before 3 a.m.

Aaron Sagert, 25, sleeping in the basement when a neighbour rang the doorbell.  

"I went upstairs just to see what was going on and it was a weird time for it," he said. "You could see the flames coming through the window."

Sagert ran upstairs to wake his mother. They were able to get out safely along with the family cat. 

Crews were able to get the fire under control about an hour. The house next door sustained minor damage to the exterior.

Fire investigators are now trying to determine a cause. Sagert says they suspect a cigarette left smouldering in a planter is to blame.
