A car collided with an SUV on Tuesday night near a major intersection in south Edmonton, killing the sedan's driver.

The crash happened around 9:20 p.m. at 111th Street and 23rd Avenue.

Police said a Kia Rio crashed into the back of a Ford Escape on 111th Street as it approached the intersection. The Escape then spun out of control into the intersection, striking a Toyota Celica that was travelling east along 23rd Avenue.

The driver of the SUV was taken to hospital for non-critical injuries. The driver of the Celica was not treated for injuries

It appears that excessive speed played a role in the crash, police said.

Media reports said there were witnesses to the incident and they were talking to investigators.
