Police are investigating after an elderly woman was struck and killed in west Edmonton Thursday night.

The 73-year-old woman was crossing 87th Avenue near 189th Street at approximately 8 p.m. when she was struck by a vehicle, police say.

There is no marked crosswalk at that section of the road, which is near a residential area.

The woman was taken to hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Police closed 87th Ave. between 182nd and 189th streets for about six hours Thursday night while they investigated.

Early investigations have ruled out alcohol and excessive speed. Police are still interviewing witnesses.

The woman’s death is the 17th this year related to the city's traffic.
