Edmontonians started to pay more on Friday to ride the bus or train.
Regular one-way adult fares rose 20 cents to $3.20. The cost of a monthly adult pass increased from $84.65 to $89.00.
Edmonton Transit says the increases are necessary to keep up with growing demand but some riders say the extra cost will hurt.
"I’m more or less considered under the poverty line as it is," said Dallas Harris. "As a lot of people, we live cheque by cheque. So it’s going to hurt a lot of people. Not just me."
The increase worries Coun. Amarjeet Sohi.
"Our transit system is becoming more and more unaffordable for those people who solely rely on public transit to move around," he said.
Chris Belec was resigned to having to pay extra for his monthly pass.
"Four dollars more. You gotta bite the bullet," he said. "You know, what can you do. We need our LRT expanded anyways."
