Edmonton teacher faces sex charges
A 27-year-old Edmonton school teacher is facing several sex charges in relation to a 15-year-old female student.
Police say they learned Friday the student was having a sexual relationship with a teacher at St. Basil Catholic School, located in central Edmonton at 102nd Street and 115th Avenue.
Piotr Zaloba is charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching and three counts of luring a child.
Insp. Dave Spiers said police are asking other potential victims to come forward.
"Anytime there's a person in a position of trust that is alleged to have committed a sexual offence with a child, there is a possibility of other victims."
The K-9 school is home to a Polish bilingual program and an all girls leadership academy and has an enrolment of about 400 students.
Edmonton Catholic Schools superintendent Joan Carr said a crisis team is in the school to help other students deal with the news.
Zaloba, a temporary contract teacher, was immediately suspended and the board launched its own internal investigation, she said.
"I am heartbroken and devastated to receive that news this weekend," she said.
School staff was told about the arrest at a meeting Sunday night and letters were sent home to parents today, Carr said.
""Our schools are safe places and this is an isolated incident that we take very seriously," she said.
