The Edmonton Public Library is celebrating its 100th birthday by handing out free library cards.

The library launched centennial celebrations at city hall Tuesday with Mayor Stephen Mandel proclaiming Wednesday as Edmonton Public Library Day.

"I can't say enough about the importance of knowledge and what a library means to a community," he said. "Most supply books and ours supply much, much more."

All branch locations will host celebrations Wednesday while community BBQs will be held in July.

Readers can sign up for their card online or at any EPL branch locations this year.
