Many people phoned Edmonton Fire Rescue when they saw thick black smoke and flames at refineries in east Edmonton on Saturday morning.
But there was no emergency.
Suncor spokesperson Nicole Fisher said refineries in the area were dealing with a power outage.
"The flare up is simply part of the typical process following a power outage, and does not pose any health or safety concerns," said Fisher.
“It's just due to the power failure at the plant. So when that happens we have some increased flaring, noise and smoke.”
However, Alberta Health Services did issue a precautionary air quality advisory for Edmonton and communities to the north and east on Saturday afternoon. The advisory was lifted on Sunday afternoon.
