Edmonton records first homicide of 2012
The death of a 22-year-old man in a north Edmonton alley Sunday morning is a homicide, police say.
The victim has been identified as Welid Sahle Meskel.
Police conducted an autopsy Tuesday but the cause of death has not been released.
They said Meskel was not a random victim, but would not specify whether his death was drug or gang related.
Meskel was discovered by a person driving down the alley near 101st Street and 134th Avenue. He had suffered injuries which he succumbed to by the time police arrived.
The homicide is Edmonton's first of 2012.
Last year, the city tallied a record 46 homicides.
Police say they are seeking information about Meskel's whereabouts on the night of Feb. 19 and the early hours of Feb. 20.
