A man who died early Friday in an alley behind an apartment building at 118th Avenue and 50th Street was a victim of homicide, Edmonton police say.

About 3:30 a.m., a man flagged down a police vehicle to report that another man had been stabbed in a nearby alley, police said.

Officers found the injured man and called for EMS but the victim died on scene from the stabbing. The name of the victim is not being released until the family is notified.

The crime is putting some residents on their guard in a neighbourhood already known for its share of shady activity.

"It makes me more nervous, for sure —100 per cent," Catherine Best told CBC News. "There's always people at the 7-Eleven and all down the street at the bus stops, drinking at all hours of the night, people yelling down the alleys all through the night."

Best said the behaviour is prompting her to look for a new place to live.

"It's mostly nighttime when they come out — drug addicts, alcoholics, street walkers," she said.

One person is in custody but police are not calling the person a suspect.

An autopsy has been scheduled for later Friday.
