Hundreds of people lined the streets of downtown to watch thousands participate in the 23rd Edmonton Marathon on Sunday.

The course was redesigned this year so that spectators and participants could enjoy the race as it weaved through established neighbourhoods with views of the city.

Runners started and finished on Jasper Avenue in front of the Shaw Conference Centre.

Edmonton lawyer Danielle Bourgeois won the female marathon in a time of 3:03:24. Latvian Arturs Bakeikis, who lives in Chicago, won the men's marathon in a time of 2:27:47. Edmonton's Tom McGrath finished in second.

More than 3,500 people participated in this year's event.
