Zachary Holland, 25, of Edmonton, was arrested Tuesday night by RCMP for being intoxicated and causing a disturbance by downtown Nanaimo, said Const. Sue Phillips.

Holland is charged with attempted murder, assault with a weapon, arson to property and four counts of arson causing bodily harm in connection to an apartment fire at 99th Street and 86th Avenue on Sunday, July 8.

Police believe Holland had a relationship with the 18-year-old female resident of the Old Strathcona apartment.

The woman was hit over the head with the lid of the back of a toilet, before the apartment was set on fire, said police.

The woman managed to leave the building while she was on fire.

A bail hearing for Holland may be held later Friday, said police.
