A number of buildings in downtown Edmonton were evacuated Thursday afternoon after an ATCO crew mistakenly cut into a gas line near 108th Street and 103rd Avenue.

"We've cordoned off several blocks of downtown as a precaution," said Capt. Jim Hudson with Edmonton Fire Rescue.

"It's a two and a half inch line that has been struck and the crews are working at it right now.  ATCO is on scene."

Eric Gorda had to leave his office because of the leak.

"We had a firefighter come into the office and say that we had to evacuate the building ‘cause there's construction right outside here and apparently they hit a gas main, so had to evacuate the building," he said.

"When we walked outside we could smell it a little bit."

No one was injured.
