The daughter ofa woman missing from a fire lookout tower is pleadingwith the public for any information about her mother's whereabouts.
RCMPsay they believe Stephanie Stewart, who hasn't been heard from in nearly a week, may be the victim of foul play.
Stewart's daughter and her husband, who do not want their names made public, made the appeal Thursday at a news conference at RCMP headquarters in Edmonton.
The daughter described her 70-year-old mother as an independent and capable woman who loved her job at as a fire spotter. She also thanked all those involved in the search.
Province to review safety
Earlier, the province announced that there will be an automatic government safety review to determinewhether any changes need to be made to the rules and guidelines concerning fire spotters.
Annette Bidniak, spokeswoman for Alberta Sustainable Resource Development, said counsellors have already been speaking with other fire spotters to see whether they have any concerns.
There has been no sign of Stewart since she spoke with her family Friday.
A massive ground search, launched Saturday after Stewart failed to radio in, failed to turn up anyclues as tothe woman'swhereabouts. Police say they doubt Stewart just wandered away or was attacked by an animal.
Stewart worked alone
Stewart was working alone at the Athabasca lookout tower about 25 kilometres northwest of Hinton and east of Jasper National Park.
Bidniak said fire spotters must check-in three times a day, adding that the department encourages fire spotters to bring their spouses, friends or pets with them to remote facilities so they're not alone.
Earlier this week police confirmed that a number of items, including bedding and an "unusual" watch, were missing from Stewart's living quarters.
Stewart, who is described asvery fit, has 18 years of experience as a fire spotter.
Police are asking anyone who noticed any suspicious activity or vehicles in the area between Aug. 25 and Aug. 26 to call Hinton RCMP at (780) 865-5544 or Crimestoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
Hinton is located 280 kilometres west of Edmonton.
