An Olympic champion is the honourary grand marshal for this year's Capital Ex parade and Honda Indy Edmonton.

Edmonton curling star Kevin Martin will lead the parade through the downtown on July 22, then participate in the Indy festivities July 23-25.

The gold medallist at the 2010 Vancouver Games reminisced at Thursday's announcement about coming to Edmonton as a child to watch the parade.

"I always would watch… you know it was just kind of a wow factor for me…and now all these years later to be in that car, it's kind of hard to believe," Martin said.

"It's humbling. I'm really excited about being part of it. It's going to be very exciting for me to be the honourary grand marshal."

Eight years after Canada won silver behind Norway in Salt Lake Games, Martin and his team made it through the Vancouver Games without losing a game.

Nicknamed the Old Bear, Martin made his first Olympic appearance in 1992, finishing fourth in Albertville, France, when curling was still a demonstration sport.

His home club is the Saville Sports Centre in Edmonton.
