Controversial rezoning of Molson brewery site approved by council
Edmonton city council has approved a controversial rezoning request that will allow a developer to build retail and residential space at the old Molson Brewery site in Oliver.
The proposal would fill the lots formerly occupied by the brewery and the old home of Crosstown Motors, which was torn down several years ago.
The plan was opposed by the Oliver Community League, which wanted a more pedestrian-friendly development that doesn’t face onto parking lots.
Instead, they believe the project will simply mirror the Oliver Square development further east along 104th Avenue.
Chris vander Hoek from the Oliver Community League was disappointed by council’s decision, which followed a public hearing on Monday.
"I have to say, I'm not really surprised," he said.
"There's certainly a precedent for this. It's kind of building on this same tradition that's been in this city before of, build it, develop it, get it done and hopefully at some point it'll get better."
Vander Hoek hopes the community league can work with the developer to address some of their concerns.
