Clara Hughes coming through Edmonton on cross-country ride
Former Olympian cycling across Canada to draw attention to mental illness
Six-time Olympic champion Clara Hughes will be cycling into Edmonton on Sunday afternoon.
Hughes is touring Canada on a bike to draw attention to mental illness and is on day 80 of her 110-day tour. She will be arriving in Edmonton at around 2:30 p.m. at the Mill Woods Park and then at an event at the Delta Edmonton hotel at 6:30 p.m.
The former Olympic speed skater and cyclist rolled into Calgary Friday and arrived at the Calgary French and International School Saturday for an official welcome. She said she has learned a lot on the trip.
"It's been amazing to be able to share but more importantly listen and to learn what the mental health landscape [is] in all corners of Canada, and to see the work that people are doing, often unsung heroes," Hughes said. "They're my unsung heroes in every single community and these are the people that we need to highlight and we need to celebrate as a nation."
Hughes has visited dozens of communities and schools to hear people's mental health stories.
She is the national spokesperson for Bell's Let's Talk campaign and her 110-day national bike tour is a partnership with the campaign.
