The widening of the Quesnell Bridge in southwest Edmonton will require the city to close part of a major Edmonton commuter route next year, officials announced Monday.
Starting March 2009, the westbound lanes of Fox Drive west of Belgravia Road will be closed for the reconstruction of the overpass. The city plans to reopen the road in December 2009.
Only transit and emergency vehicles will be allowed to use the road during the closure.
Fox Drive links the University area with the Quesnell Bridge and the city's west end.
Work on the bridge will be completed by November 2010.
The city is widening the bridge deck as well as doing the first major rehabilitation work on the structure since it was opened in 1967.
Crews will spend the winter doing work on the retaining walls north of the Quesnell Bridge.
