Brian Fjeldheim announced on Wednesday that he will not seek another term as Alberta’s chief electoral officer.

Fjeldheim was appointed in December 2009. His term ends on April 23.

Fjeldheim investigated dozens of illegal political donations to the Alberta PCs after cases involving municipalities and post-secondary institutions were uncovered by CBC News.

He claimed that Alberta law prohibited him from revealing the results of his probes.

However, the province changed the legislation late last year and Elections Alberta released details of 45 violations in January.
