Calgary-North West MLA Sandra Jansen has been named the associate minister of family and community safety, a newly-created position announced Friday by Premier Alison Redford.

Jansen, who was first elected last year, will be responsible for addressing cyberbullying, violence against women and sexual exploitation.

Redford announced the position on Friday while meeting with other premiers at the Council of the Federation in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Jansen's appointment has raised concerns about the size of Redford's cabinet.  Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith says bullying is an important issue but she wonders if Alberta really needs another minister.

"I think we have to make sure we’re watching the size of cabinet as it grows," she said.

"They had a lot of great fanfare about how they were shrinking the size of cabinet yet they keep on adding new associate ministers."

Jansen is a former journalist who used to work as Redford’s communications manager in southern Alberta.
