A bushfire northeast of Smoky Lake is out of control as of Saturday evening.

Officers from the Smoky Lake RCMP are on scene and are supported by heavy equipment operators as well as several fire departments from the surrounding area.

The crews are trying to create a break around the flames in order to control of the fire, which is being fueled by strong winds in the area.

An RCMP spokesperson told CBC News some residents may have been told to prepare to leave their homes if necessary.

Smoky Lake is about 120 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.
