A seven-year-old child is recovering in an Edmonton hospital after being mauled by a family dog, police said Saturday.
The incident happened Friday afternoon at the child's home in Wetaskiwin, south of Edmonton. The home is also a breeding centre for Rottweilers.
The boy, who had severe injuries to his leg, was airlifted to an Edmonton hospital where he is in "good stable condition."
Police say it the boy apparently entered a breeding pen where a pair of dogs were inside. The boy's father fought with the dogs to free the boy, said police.
One of the dogs has been quarantined, said police.
"At this point we're not sure why the boy made his way into the pen" says Cpl. Kevin Krebs of the Wetaskiwin RCMP.
"We're in the process of looking into why this happened as well as to why these dogs became so aggressive."
