A former Canadian Forces member is facing criminal charges after his comments on social media led to his arrest at an Alberta military base.

On Wednesday, an off-duty military police officer in Kingston, Ont., spotted comments he thought were threatening to personnel at CFB Wainwright, about 235 kilometres southeast of Edmonton. Local military police were notified and when the man who made the comments was spotted at CFB Wainwright the next day he was arrested.

He was found to be in possession of a loaded 9-mm Beretta handgun.

"One can only think how devastating this situation could have been without the great work of our military police, both on and off duty," Canadian Forces spokesman Maj. Yves Desbiens said Saturday.

The former Canadian Forces member, who served from 2003 and 2013 as an electronic technician, was never deployed overseas.
