It's no surprise that it often pays much more to work in the public sector, but often the comparison can still be astonishing.

On Friday the Alberta government released its first sunshine list - a glimpse into the salaries of those earning more than $100,000 a year.

CBC Edmonton selected five positions and compared those salaries to people working the private sector. All public sector wages include cash and non-cash benefits, while private wages include salaries and bonuses as calculated by Monster.ca

 Here's what we found:

  • An HR manager in International and Intergovernmental Relations makes $128,000 compared to $104,225 in the private sector , with top earners making $136,500.
  • A Level II geologist in the Ministry of Energy makes $126,500.  Those in the private sector earn much less at $81,500 on average,  with top making upwards of $95,000.
  • A project manager Level IV in Agriculture and Rural Development makes $141,000 compared to $103,000 in the private sector. Top earners for this position in the private sector make $126,000.
  • A senior security manager in the Ministry of Justice and Solicitor General makes $146,000 but only $90,000 in the private sector.
  • A communications manager in the government's Executive Council makes $134,300 working for the government, but only and  $93,000 in the private sector, with top earners making $118,000.
