Fire investigators are going through the day room in one of the buildings at Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, after a fire caused extensive damage.

An employee smelled smoke before 10 o'clock last night. Staff members moved 106 patients from the building to another area of the hospital, after thick black smoke started to fill the day room, a common area where patients spend their time when out of their hospital rooms.

The fire was traced to a piece of furniture.

Officials are assessing the air quality in the building.

Damage is estimated at $200,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
