A 52-year-old Alberta man tried to flee the country after he was arrested on sexual assault and child pornography charges involving a friend's four-year-old daughter, a judge was told Friday.

Kenneth McKinley showed no emotion as he appeared before the court by closed circuit television Friday morning.

McKinley is in protective custody at the Edmonton Remand Centre.

Police believe McKinley spent time last year alone with a four-year-old girl, the daughter of acquaintances.

They believe during that time he sexually assaulted her and took pornographic pictures which he distributed over the internet.

Last month McKinley tried to flee the country while on bail, the Crown prosecutor told the court.

American border officials refused him entry.

After McKinley was later found in Edmonton with an internet powered cell phone, in breach of his release conditions, his bail was revoked.

McKinley will be back in court next month, after he's been assessed by a psychiatrist.
