An abandoned building gutted by an overnight fire in downtown Edmonton was demolished this morning so firefighters could be certain the fire is out.

Firefighters worked through the night at the building on 105th Avenue and 102nd Street, which started just before midnight.

Much of their efforts focused on saving an auto body shop next door which was damaged by water and smoke.

Investigators said the fire was started accidently by people living under the stairs attached to the building.

The damage is estimated at $1 million.
