Capacity issues at the Edmonton Humane Society have eased slightly, allowing staff to take in unwanted dogs in severe cases. However, cats still can’t be dropped off.

Earlier this week, the shelter had so many animals, staff had to turn away anyone with unwanted pets.

Response from the public has been overwhelming since the story went public this week, said spokesperson Travis Grant.

"We've done 56 adoptions since the 31st of July but we do have to keep in mind that at that same time we've had 53 stray animals from outside of the Edmonton area come into our care," he said.

"So we're always balancing the two, but right now we can handle a few more dogs."

The increased demand has caused the humane society website to crash. Prospective pet owners can look at animals available for adoption through the organization’s Twitter feed and Facebook page.
