With May’s arrival, the city’s summer season has kicked off – granted, a little ahead of the summer weather.

Shhh! Art in auction

What: The Art Gallery of Alberta will host Art on the Block Friday night, giving the most cutthroat of Alberta collectors the chance to snag a one-of-a-kind piece at the silent art auction. For those who merely wish to watch, there will be plenty of cocktails, snacks and nifty artistic pieces to check out. Tickets cost $125.

When? May 2 at 7 p.m.

Feeling crafty

What: Back for its 8th year, the Butterdome Spring Craft Sale is among the best handmade markets in the country. More than 170 local crafters, knitters, painters, jewellers and more will be on hand to sell off their wares but get there early or plan to take the LRT if you don’t want to contend with the parking crowds. Admission is $5 for adults.

When? Doors open at 10 a.m. from May 2 to 4

The other craft … beer

What: Food truck eats and nearly 100 different types of ales, lagers, stouts and brews will be at your disposal Friday night as Sherbrooke Liquor hosts the Urban Craft Beer & Food Festival at the Alberta Aviation Museum. For $25, you can sample food from Bully, Little Village, The Local Omnivore and Sailing on as you sample sips of all the suds.

When? May 2 from 6 to 10 p.m.

Take a stroll

What: Walk a different street this weekend as part of Jane’s Walk Edmonton. The guided walking program first got its start in Toronto in 2007 as a way for city-dwellers to explore new neighbourhoods and meet others in their community. With 26 different walks available, there is something for every one and every ability.

When? Kickoff walk takes place May 2 at noon from City Hall

Wash your dog for a cause

What: Spring melt and spring cleaning mean one thing: your pet is virtually guaranteed to be a mess and make one too. So why not shampoo your dog and do some good at the same time? The Animal Cancer Therapy Subsidization Society of Alberta (ACTSA) is holding a Dog Wash fundraiser this weekend to raise money and awareness about pet cancers. A full list of participating groomers is available here.

When? Appointments are available May 3
