5 things to do in Edmonton this weekend
Edmonton truly lives up to its arts city reputation this weekend
This weekend the arts are sweeping the city — giving you a chance to take a mystical march through the river valley, make a special something for your special someone or take in some live theatre. Oh — and there are also dinosaurs.
The Flying Canoe Adventure
What: Why fight the cold weather when you can embrace it? That’s the sentiment behind the Flying Canoe Adventure — a special trek through Mill Creek Ravine hosted by La Cité Francophone. Bundle up and join the guided hike, get chased by wolves and dance along to some live Métis jigs and reels — and when you’re done, catch a ride in a horse-drawn sleigh to the City of Lights set up at La Cité Francophone
When? Feb. 7 and 8; Ravine activities run from 6 to 10 p.m., City of Lights will remain open until midnight
Boyle Street Maker’s Faire
What: Billing itself as an event that “will change the way we look at markets,” the Boyle Street Maker’s Faire promises something for everyone, including a Kids on Muck & Guck Room, a coffeeshop and 70 booths of snacks, arts and crafts (a full list of vendors is available here) — and it’s all going down at the Boyle Street Plaza (9538 - 103A Ave).
When? Feb. 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Print Your Heart Out
What: Still looking for that perfect, heartfelt gift for your special someone this Valentine’s Day? Look no further, but hustle your way to the SNAP Printshop (12056 - Jasper Avenue). For $20, you’ll get to use the shop’s fancy Lino blocks, vintage lead type and letterpress to print out four custom-made Valentine’s cards for your loved ones. Or, if you’re looking for a mixture of cards, there’ll be plenty of opportunity to trade with other participants.
When? Feb. 8 from noon to 5 p.m.
What: Hot off a successful run in Toronto, the Craigslist Cantata is what it sounds like — hilarious online personal ads set to music. Called “musical theatre’s next great app” by the Globe and Mail, the show promises to have you rolling in the aisles as it explores the murky, awkward and occasionally laughable world of online ads. Tickets are available here.
When? Show runs nightly from Feb. 5 to 23
Brushstrokes and bones
What: U of A Museums and Enterprise Square Galleries (10230 - Jasper Ave) are teaming up to host a novel series of exhibits spanning time and space in the downtown display space. Perhaps the biggest draw will be DinoStars — the two dinosaur specimens (baby Chasmosaurusbelli and mummified Edmontosaurusregalis) that recently made headlines. Other exhibits will feature local paintings, films and music, all to remain on display through March. Admission is by donation.
When? Gallery is open from 12 to 6 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays, noon to 4 p.m. on Saturdays
