Three women have died in Alberta waiting for urinary tract surgery, a doctor told reporters Thursday.

Dr. Jane Schulz, a urogynecologist, said another 1,000 women are on a waiting list for the surgery in Edmonton alone.

"It's very frustrating and makes me concerned and sad that we have significant morbidity and mortality on our waiting list," she said at a news conference organized by the Alberta Liberals.

Health Minister Fred Horne said he is aware of the problem and that two new specialists have been added in Calgary, but he admits it's difficult to recruit the physicians needed.

Schulz also said the recent budget will make it even more difficult to get the surgery.
