29-storey high rise approved for Oliver neighbourhood
Edmonton city councillors have approved a 29-storey high rise in the Oliver neighbourhood despite complaints from area residents.
The building will be built on the site of the John T. Ross residence, a designated historic building at 97th Avenue and 111th Street.
The tower will sit on a podium that will include the Ross residence as well as townhouses at street level.
Current zoning allows four-storey buildings with 36 families.
Ben Sherren, who lives nearby with his family, told councillors at a public hearing that the high-rise will increase density and reduce the number of units that could be built for families on the property.
“This means that 23 families are going to have to locate outside of the downtown core which goes back to having to contribute to the urban sprawl argument,” he said.
Sherren said the tower will cast shade on the nearby elementary school and destroy the family-friendly nature of the area.
The development has the support of the city planning department and the Oliver Community League.
Construction is expected to start this summer.
