2 dead in fiery Highway 63 crash south of Fort McMurray
Highway 63 could be closed for most of the day
A fiery crash on Highway 63 south of Fort McMurray killed two people and completely closed the busy highway for what could be the rest of the day.
Police say two transport trucks — one believed to be a tanker hauling diesel fuel — crashed head-on killing both drivers.
At least four other vehicles including another tractor trailer and three pick-ups hit the ditch to avoid the crash, RCMP said. Nobody in those vehicles was hurt.
Brad Grainger, with the Fort McMurray fire department, said firefighters are letting one of the tractor trailers on fire burn out.
No one other than the two victims was taken to hospital, Grainger said.
Roads were icy at the time.
There is no information on other injuries or what caused the crash about 75 kilometres south of Fort McMurray.
Traffic is being rerouted to Highway 881.
