Two people are dead, and a third is in hospital following an early morning crash on Highway 881 in northern Alberta.

The crash happened around 4:30 a.m. MT Monday, about three kilometres east of the Highway 63 turnoff.

Police say the driver of a Pontiac Sunfire was attempting to pass another vehicle, when it crossed the centre line and crashed head-on with a pickup truck.

Two passengers in the Sunfire died at the scene, while the driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the truck wasn't injured.

The victims' names have not been released.

Police believe alcohol may be a factor in the crash.

Highway 881 was reopened to traffic on Monday afternoon.
