A proposed $150 million expansion of Fort Edmonton Park will be discussed Monday by council’s community services committee.
The expansion includes a new aboriginal history museum, the addition of a ballroom and 22 guest rooms to the Selkirk Hotel, and new rides, entertainment and food for the midway.
Coun. Mike Nickel says he supports the investment.
“Fort Edmonton Park is an institution. It's part of what the city is," he said. "That's why I just don't treat it callously and say no.
"There's lots of good elements to the project that are worthy of support but at $150 million, it's going to be hard to find the money.”
The Fort Edmonton Management Company plans to apply for grant money from federal and provincial governments.
The report suggests the expansion could be done in time for Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017, though Nickel is concerned that may not be enough time to get funding in place.
