Nearly 200 people attended a private memorial ceremony held Saturday afternoon for the three guards killed at HUB mall one year ago today.

On June 15, 2012, armoured truck guards Brian Ilesic, 35, Eddie Rejano, 39, and Michelle Shegelski, 26, were shot while re-supplying an ATM machine in the University of Alberta facility.

A fourth guard, Matt Schuman, survived a bullet to the head.

It was Schuman’s cries for help that were eventually overheard by two members of the campus safe walk program, who then called police.

Travis Baumgartner, who also worked for G4S, is now facing three charges of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. He was arrested by a border guard when he tried to cross into Washington state shortly after the shooting, and goes to trial in early September.

The private memorial ceremony was held in a tent erected adjacent to HUB mall, during which a red oak tree was planted to commemorate the three guards killed.

Although the families of the fallen guards did not speak to the media directly, a statement was read out on behalf of Brian Ilesic’s family.

"Brian was a fun loving man who enjoyed life and was very devoted to his family and friends, especially to his precious daughter," it reads.

"Brian, it will be Father's Day tomorrow. We will never forget what an awesome father you were. You were a loving son, genuine brother, attentive grandson, special uncle, great nephew and fun loving cousin. You were a friend that no one will forget."

Schuman did not attend the memorial.
