One man is dead after a head-on collision west of Edmonton — but a second death was likely prevented by three passersby who stopped to help.

RCMP were called to the crash on Highway 770 near Township Road 512 at around 6:25 a.m. Monday.

The driver of one vehicle was killed in the collision.

Around the time of the accident, an off-duty firefighter from the Stony Plain Fire Department and two other people happened to drive by the collision and stopped to help.

They were able to pull the driver of the second vehicle out of the burning car. The man was airlifted to the University of Alberta hospital by STARS. The extent of his injuries are not known at this time.

There were no passengers in either vehicle.

RCMP were able to speak to two of the Good Samaritans. They would like to hear from the third about what he may have seen.

"We are looking for other witnesses, other passersby that did witness the accident that could perhaps provide some information on what they saw to help us with the investigation," said Const. Kathleen Fossen from the Spruce Grove/Stony Plain RCMP.

RCMP are still investigating the cause of the collision.
