The fire broke out just before 1 p.m.at Surrey Gardens, located at 178th Street and 69th Avenue.

Two units were engulfed in flames and another 24 were evacuated. It took fire crews about an hour and a half to get the fire under control.

One person sustained a burned hand.  Neighbours banged on doors to make sure everyone was able to get out safely.

"One young fellow went in and he got out an elderly couple," said Bill Blythe. "And it was really dangerous for him to do that ... he should be recognized for his heroics."

Damages were estimated at around $3 million.
