A nine-year-old Japanese boy has died after falling into a crevasse on a glacier in Jasper National Park.

Naofumi Fukushima slipped into the crevasse while hiking with his father on the Columbia Glacier on Wednesday afternoon. An ice bridge he was walking on suddenly gave way, sending him into the crevasse.

A team of paramedics and park wardens spent hours trying to retrieve the boy from the narrow gap. When he was brought to the surface he had no pulse.

The boy's family is temporarily living in Calgary where the father is working at the University of Calgary medical school.
