CBCNews.ca and Mobile News Apps FAQs
February 2011: We are making a number of significant changes to CBCNews.ca and launching a CBC News app for mobile devices. Please see below for answers to any questions you may have. If your question is not answered here, please contact CBC Audience Relations.
Why do some parts of the site look like the old CBCNews.ca while others look like the new version? We are completing the renewal of CBCNews.ca in stages on Saturday, February 19th, which means that throughout the morning some portions of the site will have the new design, while others will continue to have the previous design. We expect the full renewal to be complete by the afternoon. Thank you for your patience.
How do I change my region? You can find regional stories on the CBCNews.ca homepage. These appear directly below the main headlines. Next to the name of the region you will see a link that says "Change". Follow the instructions there. You can of course continue to find news from the regions on their respective sites, such as: http://www.cbc.ca/bc.
Why does it show news from the wrong city or town on the homepage? We use a technique called geo-location to guess what city your computer is in, based on your IP address. It’s generally accurate, but if it’s not in your case, you can easily change your region by clicking the "Change" link next to the region name.
Where do I find Most Viewed/Most Commented stories? This module lives halfway down the CBCNews.ca homepage, and towards the bottom of other section pages.
What is Facebook Recommendations that I can see on the homepage and section pages? The Recommendations module shows you content on CBC.ca that has been most recommended by Facebook users. If you are logged in to Facebook, you will also see personalized page recommendations which show what you and your Facebook friends have recommended. CBC never sees this information, and the view that you see is unique to you.
Where are the podcasts? News podcasts are here. They can also be found by clicking the Podcasts button in the "Stay Connected" module available on the right-hand side of every page on CBCNews.ca.
How do I get your stories via RSS? Most modern browsers now have RSS facilities built in so we recommend you use that if you wish to view articles via RSS. You can also get a list of all our RSS feeds here.
How do I change the font size on a story? Most browsers have a built-in function to change the text size on the screen. Try looking in your browser menu (usually in the "View" menu).
Mobile News Apps
How do I get the app onto my iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad? You can download the app directly from the App Store in the iTunes Store to your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. Just use the App Store icon on your device. You can connect by either wifi or 3G. Alternatively, you can use a computer to download the app from iTunes and install it onto your device.
How do I get the app onto my Android smartphone? You can download the app directly from the Android Market to your Android 2.1+ device. You can connect by either wifi or 3G. Alternatively, you can use a computer to access the Android Market.
Why is the Android app called a "hybrid" app? The app uses both native Android functions and viewing web pages (WebView), so it’s a hybrid of a native app and web app.
How do I get the app onto my BlackBerry? You can download the app directly from BlackBerry App World to your BlackBerry 6 OS touch-enabled BlackBerry smartphones, including BlackBerry Torch 9800, BlackBerry Storm 9530 and BlackBerry Storm2 9550. Just use the App World icon on your device. You can connect by either wifi or 3G. Alternatively, you can use a computer to access BlackBerry App World, download the app and install it using BlackBerry Desktop Software.
Why is the BlackBerry app called a "launcher" app? The app installs a shortcut on your BlackBerry touch-enabled device that launches the browser and takes you to the upgraded CBC News touch-optimized site.
How much is it costing me to play a mobile video through the News app? If you’re connected via wifi, there are no additional charges. If you’re connected via 3G, there may be additional costs depending on the data plan you have with your wireless provider (Bell, Rogers, etc).
When I watch video why is it slow to load or the quality poor? You will have better results with video when you use a wifi network that has a strong signal. The video should appear improved.
A Twitter or live chat widget in the app is blank – what’s wrong? These widgets currently aren’t fully supported, though in some cases there is a link to a mobile-friendly feed. Try clicking on it to see the content.
How do I send news if I don’t have an email account set up on my device? I see an error message. You must have an email account set up on your device to be able to send reports, photos or videos. Will there be commenting on the apps? Yes, we intend to enable commenting on stories for iPhone, iPod and iPad in the near future. In the meantime you can still comment on the CBCNews.ca website, and, using the Share functions in the apps, you can tell your friends about the stories you are interested in.
iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad apps:
How do I make sure the app isn’t constantly downloading? Close the app or leave it running in the background. Once you open it again, it will update with new content.
Why does your app ask to use my location? We use location services in our apps to provide more relevant news and weather for you. We set your weather location and the content for the "My Region" view based on location information. We do not store this information or use it for any other purpose.
Why is the app not showing any content/not updating? Are you connected to the internet? You need wifi or 3G service to use the app so it can load the latest news stories. We do not currently have an option to read content while you are offline, but it will be available soon.
My weather isn’t set to my town or city, how do I change it? When you are viewing the weather forecast select the settings button (cog wheel icon) to change your weather location. On the weather settings screen you can search for your location in the list by typing in the first letters of your town or city. Then select it from the search results to change your weather location.
My region isn’t set correctly. How do I change it? Select "My Region" by pressing the title bar on the Home Screen (There are various ways to do this on iPhone and iPad). You should now see a button labeled "Change Region". Use this to change your region.
