Canadian veterans travel back to Korea
Korean War veterans make visit amid recent tensions on the peninsula
CBC's Catherine Mercier reports from the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea, where a group of Canadian Korean War veterans made the trip back and reconnected with a part of their past.
The veterans travelled with Veterans Affairs Minister Steven Blaney. One veteran, who was wounded in the fighting and lost close friends during the Korean conflict, told Mercier it brought tears to his eyes to be back.
"Almost 60 years ago, the armistice was signed not far from here, putting an end to the conflict — but the two Koreas are still technically at war," Mercier reported. "And the recent tensions on the Korean peninsula are a constant reminder that the peace these men fought for remains fragile."
