Some employees at a seniors' residence in Strathmore, east of Calgary, have lost their jobs because of privatization.
Nine permanent and five part-time workers at Wheatland Lodge were given their notices after Alberta Health Services awarded the operating contract to Bayshore Home Health — a for-profit company.
Wheatland Lodge, which was managed by the non-profit organization Wheatland Housing, provides long term and assisted living care.
The employees are represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees.
In a written statement, the union says the workers were offered jobs with Bayshore Home Health, but at a lower rate of pay and with fewer benefits.
