Two people are in critical condition following a crash on Highway 2 north of Airdrie, Alta.

At about 10 a.m., a southbound car entered the highway median just south of the Crossfield overpass.

The car went through the wire barricade, became airborne and hit the rear end of a northbound semi-trailer.

A second semi-trailer took evasive action and entered the median.

The occupants of the trucks weren't injured, but the male and female in the car were transported by STARS Air Ambulance to hospital in Calgary in critical condition. RCMP later said they were in non-life threatening condition.

Airdrie RCMP are investigating. They said alcohol is not believed to have been a factor.

Northbound traffic was being diverted onto the shoulder of the northbound lanes.

Travellers were advised to use different routes around the scene of the collision.

Late Friday afternoon, Airdrie RCMP said the highway was reopen.
