Calgary police responded to a robbery at Market Mall in the city's northwest early Monday morning.
Just before 4 a.m. MT, police say a stolen white SUV rammed into one of the entrances of the shopping centre.
A jewelry store called Jewels by Maxime’s was broken into and had a significant amount of merchandise taken.
The planned robbery took less than 10 minutes, say police.
"On occasion these events happen, at smaller stand-alone retail outlets. But something of this nature is quite rare," Duty Insp. Darren Leggat.
Paige O'Neill, the general manager of Market Mall, says only the entranceway was damaged.
"This was a surprise, I'll be honest with you," she said. "This is a relatively quiet mall. We're very happy, if it were to occur, that it happened at night, no clients."
Police say the security guard on duty heard a loud crash and alerted authorities.
Police find SUV allegedly used in heist
Market Mall management is looking at installing physical barriers at the entrances.
Police believe they have found the vehicle involved in the incident, a Dodge Journey, in plain sight in the nearby community of Varsity.
Officials say the vehicle was stolen from the Rocky Ridge area about a week ago.
The SUV is now being examined at the Calgary police forensic crime scene unit facility.
At this time, police believe two people were involved in the robbery and both had their faces covered.
Police are reviewing surveillance footage to see if they can release photos of the suspects.
The undisclosed amount of jewelry taken may have serial numbers on it, and police are asking public to be on the alert.
Anyone with information is asked to call Calgary Crime Stoppers.
