'Suspicious' fire guts Montgomery home, firefighter assaulted

Police say a fire that gutted a house in the northwest Calgary community of Montgomery early Wednesday morning is suspicious. A firefighter was also assaulted by a resident of the house, say police.

Police say a fire that gutted a house in the northwest Calgary community of Montgomery early Wednesday morning is suspicious.

A firefighter was also assaulted by a resident of the house when he first arrived at the scene, said Duty Staff Sgt.Jon James.

“He was subsequently arrested and is in custody right now. A second male was arrested at the scene on outstanding warrants,” he said.

Charges are pending against both men.

Crews were called to the house on the 1800 block of 41st Street N.W. just after midnight.

Police and firefighters remained at the scene on Wednesday morning as crews put out hotspots inside the badly-damaged home.

The arson unit is investigating the fire. There were no injuries.
