Suspicious fire destroys classroom at Willow Park School
Arson suspected in early morning blaze in Calgary's southeast
Arson is suspected after fire crews extinguished a blaze in a classroom at Willow Park School in southeast Calgary early Wednesday morning.
One classroom was fully engulfed in flames when crews responded to alarm bells at the school at 343 Willow Park Drive S.E., said Battalion Chief John Cherweniuk.
Firefighters put out the blaze and kept it from spreading, but the room was totally destroyed and smoke filled much of the building.
The arson unit is now investigating.
“There’s definitely hints of vandalism. We found numerous windows on the east side of the building that were broken, and there were large rocks on the inside,” Cherweniuk said.
There will be no classes at the school for at least the remainder of the week while the building is repaired.
“We are committed to having students back in school as soon as possible," said Naomi Johnson, chief superintendent of schools for the Calgary Board of Education.
Parents and students can find updates on the situation on both the CBE and Willow Park School websites.
