Police say a stabbing that was initially thought to be linked to a cellphone sale arranged through Kijiji was actually a targeted attack.

A 21-year-old man was stabbed in the chest Sunday night after he got into a vehicle with three other men in southeast Calgary.

Investigators were told at the time that the victim had arranged to sell a cellphone through Kijiji — an online classified ad website — and was meeting the potential buyer in the parking lot at 250 Shawville Blvd. S.E.

The victim’s girlfriend took him to hospital with life-threatening stab wounds. His condition was later upgraded to serious.

Through the co-operation of Kijiji, police have concluded that the incident did not arise from an attempt to sell a cellphone.

Investigators now believe it was a targeted attack, and that the victim knew the suspects.

Police continue to follow-up leads and identify possible suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.
