A pair of big storm cells swept across southern Alberta late Thursday triggering tornado warnings and hitting parts of northwest Calgary with a sudden dump of hail.

Environment Canada issued the tornado warnings around supper time for several areas, including the County of Newell near Gem, Wheatland County near Hussar, Kneehill County near Torrington and Wimborne, as well as Standard and Gleichen.

By late evening all of the warnings had been lifted without any reports of tornados materializing.

One of the storm cells brought a sudden downpour of rain and hail to Calgary’s north western edge, causing flooding and stranding vehicles in the Silver Springs area.
